I went on an epic bike ride this weekend from my house on the West Side to Crystal Beach, Ontario. It was about 15 miles each way, which I recognize isn’t epic for some people but dude, we crossed an international border. Even if I crossed over and then came right back it should still garner your amazement.
(I love living so close to another country. Mostly because it amuses me. Sometimes I look out my office window and say things like, “Oh hey, CANADA.”)
Anyway, in addition to this weekend’s ride I’ve been trying to bike as much as possible. This includes riding to work as well as tooling around anywhere and anytime I can. While we were in Portland, Josh and I rented bikes for two days. We had to bike up some very steep hills and for long distances, and the experience broke a wall for me. As soon as we turned in our rentals I knew that I’d get serious about biking when I returned home.
I can’t emphasize enough how clear it is to me now that I had built up a resistance to biking, mostly out of fear of my own abilities. And laziness. Hills and rides that used to intimidate me now seem challenging in a fun way. Imagine that.
This weekend Sean and I and some friends are going to try to bike around Canandaigua Lake. I’m not sure if we’ll make it all the way but the important thing is that now I’m trying.

lisa - That’s great about the biking. I too am trying to ride more, but haven’t gotten past my fear of long rides or super bumpy trails. Hopefully while the weather’s still nice out, I’ll build up a resistence too.
courtney - Biking is one of those things I always WANT to do. And then it’s like, “Eh, tomorrow.” Maybe this entry will be my extra push of motivation. I make no guarantees but. I will say, I AM AMAZED AT YOUR FLIPPANT BORDER CROSSING. Also: (I love living so close to another country. Mostly because it amuses me.
